0 England lose Cook before rain stoppage

LEEDS: England lost the wicket of Alastair Cook on a rain-shortened morning on the third day of the second Test at Headingley on Saturday.

England were 80 for one when lunch was taken early after only 55 minutes of play was possible as England, one down in the three-match series, set out in pursuit of South Africa's first innings total of 419.

England captain Andrew Strauss and Cook had to combat some hostile bowling from Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander after resuming at 48 for no wicket.

The first runs of the day came in the fourth over when Strauss glanced Philander for four.

Philander made the breakthrough when Cook played around a straight delivery and was given out leg before wicket by umpire Steve Davis for 24. Cook unsuccessfully sought a review which showed the ball was hitting his middle stump.

Strauss was troubled by some well-directed short balls from Morkel, while new batsman Jonathan Trott, on five, edged Philander just short of Graeme Smith at first slip.

England scored 32 runs in 12.2 overs before rain stopped play. Strauss was on 33 not out and Trott was on six. (AFP)
